OVERLOADED, DIAPHRAGM-CONTROLLED FIRST STAGE
The heart of the regulator is the first stage. Most Apek first stages operate with an overloaded, diaphragm-controlled mechanism. In an overbalanced first stage, as the diver's depth increases, the average pressure in the tube increases faster than in a conventional, balanced first stage. The increased average pressure compensates for the increasing density of breathing gas, allowing more breathing gas to flow through the system when needed (i.e. during inhalation). The result is above-average breathing performance, regardless of depth.
DRY CHAMBER PROTECTED BY A DIAPHRAGM.
Most first-stage automatics are equipped with a unique "Dry Seal" seal. This device performs several functions, including protecting against icing of the mainspring, which can occur during dives in very cold waters. "Dry Seal" also protects the first stage drying chamber from the ingress of dirt. This eliminates the need for oily silicone oils or grease filling in the regulator.
The DST offers great convenience with its rotating head. There are medium-pressure ports that provide good hose configuration especially in stage sets for which there is a dedicated Nitrox version.
The DST has 4 medium pressure outlets (3/8" UNF) and 2 high pressure outlets (7/16" UNF).
Of course, the Apeks DST 1st stage is suitable for cold water and therefore also for temperatures below 10°C.
